The Georgian parliament has moved one step closer to Russia. Taking a decision in line with Putin’s request, the Georgian Parliament decided to criminalize the street demonstrations by calling them provocations of foreign agents. So how can such a bill be passed by the parliament? Either there is great pressure on the MPs, or they have been given a big carrot and silenced them.
Good legislation or not, Georgia was not, and never will be, a country of complete freedom, so they could easily pass a divisive “foreign agent” law that sparked mass street protests for weeks.
Critics, on the other hand, say that the bill, which they call the “Russian law”, can be used to threaten civil liberties. The law itself actually explains what the purpose is by putting the title of foreign agent. There is no need for critics to evaluate this.
There is a high probability that other regional but weak republics under Putin’s influence will make similar decisions.
