Applaudable decision from Chinese justice: Life imprisonment for $57.5 million bribe

The former vice chairman of China’s banking regulator has been sentenced to life in prison, CNA reported. Cai Esheng was convicted of accepting US$57.5 million in bribes while in office.

This means that bribery is an infectious disease that even dictator countries like China cannot prevent. Regardless of his position, the insatiable greed of people cannot prevent him from taking bribes.

As for the issue of life imprisonment being the penalty for bribery; It is the heaviest punishment that can be given. It is not possible to prevent bribery with 3-6 year prison sentences. Because for 57 million dollars, people can afford to stay in prison for 3 years. They can present themselves as clean by passing the bribes they receive on to their relatives.

There is only one way to prevent bribery: people have to know that they can be punished very severely. Otherwise, robbing people in Turkey, Indonesia, India and other Asian and Far Asian countries cannot be prevented.
